The 2005 ASN
Canada FIA Canadian SoloSprint Championship took place at Shannonville on August 21 under beautiful late summer sunny skies.
The host
organizing club for
the event, the HADA Motorsport Club headed by energetic John Paczynski,
did a fantastic job in setting-up and operating the Shannonville
facility, ably assisted by members of the ASN National Solosport
Committee and CASC-OR's Solo Ontario group headed by Chris Sorenson.
Seventy-five
competitors took to the track for the Championship.
As the
practice sessions unfolded, participants soon realized that the
competition was at a very high level and between sessions much time was
spent under the hood adjusting engines and under the fenders
tweaking suspension settings. Tire pressure gauges were in
abundance.
The official lapping sessions
started.
Drivers
worked hard to post fast times early knowing that speed and consistency
are the two most important elements of SoloSport. The kerbs were
being used to their fullest and puffs of dust could be seen around the
track while drivers avoided the dreaded four-wheels-off penalty.
Adding to heightened competition, the
timing and scoring team were on top of things all day and competitors
knew where they stood within minutes of a track session.
It wasn't long before previous record
lap speeds began to fall and "wows" were heard at the bulletin board.
With rubber being laid down around
the track, drivers had to adjust to the changing conditions to gain a
competitive edge. And adjust they did with times getting faster
and faster.
A few "ooops" "offs" were noted as
the final laps were completed. Only one car went home on a flat
bed. No one was injured (except for a few bruised egos).
As the podium ceremonies drew to a
close with the popping of champagne corks, there was no doubt about the
quality of the day and the quality of the event. Many drivers
logged their best personal performances ever as new records were set.
A great ending to some outstanding competition.
Everyone congratulated the winners
and the volunteer organizers for a spectacular event and are looking
forward to the ASN Canada FIA 2006 National SoloSprint Championships.
